Music at Middlebrook

The Middlebrook Music program provides students with opportunities to explore and share their interests, skills, talents and backgrounds.

Through creative practices, we engage students in experiences that will equip them with skills to become Multiliterate Contemporary Scholars, Self-Navigating Expert Learners, Active Socially-Sensitive Citizens, Healthy Balanced Human Beings, Creative Entrepreneurial Designers, and Courageous Ethical Leaders.

Our team expectations for success are simple, yet vital, life skills:

  • Arrive on time and prepared

  • Be respectful and supportive

  • Participate fully

  • Exhibit a positive attitude and sense of cooperation

  • Use all materials and equipment responsibly

  • Listen actively (be still, be silent, maintain eye contact with the source, respond appropriately)

Student engagement looks like:

  • Engagement in Authentic Experiences

  • Engagement in the Four Artistic Processes (Creating, Performing, Responding, and Making connections through musical knowledge, personal experiences, or societal contexts)

  • Engagement in Critical Thinking

  • Engagement in Problem-Solving

  • Engagement in Communication

  • Engagement in Collaboration

  • Engagement in Productive Partnerships with Home and the Community

Our Programs

  • Welcome to the Middlebrook Chorus, where every student who loves to sing is invited to join us on a musical journey of exploration and growth. Our chorus is dedicated to fostering a love for music through a variety of choral styles, from classical to contemporary.

Throughout the course, students will focus on developing their personal vocal skills and improving sight-reading abilities. These foundational skills not only enhance musical proficiency but also enrich overall musical understanding and appreciation.

As members of the chorus, students will have the opportunity to participate in several performances throughout the school year. These performances are mandatory, as they provide valuable experiences for students to showcase their talents and celebrate their musical achievements with family, friends, and the community.

Join us as we harmonize, learn, and perform together. Let’s make this year in chorus an unforgettable musical journey!

  • The Middlebrook Band includes students who play a band instrument such as a flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, or percussion instruments.  Band students should already have played their instrument in fifth grade or started lessons the summer before entering sixth grade.  Students are expected to practice their instrument at home.

The band rehearses once a week during the school day, and in addition, students have one or two lessons per week in small classes of similar instruments. Advanced band students may also participate in our pop and jazz groups, such as the Sixth Dimension and the Stage Bands.

The band performs at school concerts and assemblies as well as at community events such as parades.  We participate in the annual Youth Band Night at a WHS football game halftime show and our smaller ensembles also perform at art shows both at school and at the Wilton Library.

  • Sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade Orchestra is open to all students who play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students in this course will strive to play challenging music with artistry and proper technique, to improve their understanding of music notation and terminology, to understand the history and significance of music studied in class, to develop the ability to improvise and compose music, and to develop an  appreciation for great music.  Orchestra students perform in two evening concerts each year, plus any additional performance opportunities that arise. Students may additionally choose to audition for the Advanced Strings Club.

  • This year-long course is required for students who do not perform with the band, chorus, or orchestra.  In this course, students use a variety of percussive, string and keyboard instruments to perform a varied repertoire of music. Singing is included as well, as it helps students strengthen their ability to listen to, describe, and analyze music.

Utilizing instruments and digital media, students develop their ability to read, translate and notate musical ideas, improvise, and compose/arrange music within specified guidelines.  Students will also evaluate music, music performances, discuss music in relation to history and culture, and develop skills in understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

  • The Wilton High School Marching Band & Color Guard Welcomes Middlebrook Students in Band, Orchestra, and Chorus in grades 7&8. Participating in the marching band gives Middlebrook students the opportunity to travel and perform on their instrument, participate in school spirit activities such as home football games, and most importantly a chance to experience what music is like at the high school level. So during their 8th grade year when it’s time to register for courses for high school they will know if marching band is something they want to continue or just sign up for a music class during the day only. Marching Band has a mandatory band camp before school starts and it lasts for the first quarter of the year.
