Choral Placement Hearings 2026-2027

This year, all WHS Choirs students (except seniors) will take place in a no-stress choral placement hearing during class. The choral placement will determine the choral ensemble you are placed in next year, and also helps Mr. M determine section placements for the rest of the year. Choral placements are required for all WHS Choirs students, even if you are not planning on enrolling in choir next year. Current Madrigals (except seniors) are required to do their choral placement after school at a scheduled time.

Choral placement hearings will take place in class from January 20th - January 30th.

If you would like to be considered for Madrigal Singers next year, you should indicate this on the WHS Choirs Placement Google Form (to be posted on Schoology), and prepare the advanced choral excerpt found below.

Madrigal Singers is an auditioned group of choral students specializing in the performance of unaccompanied works in all periods. Students are expected to be comfortable singing one-on-a-part a cappella music, and should be dedicated members of our WHS Choirs community, both through their musical and collaborative skills. Students will display exemplary ability in expressive musical performance, while most importantly, creating a safe and supportive atmosphere that will be conducive to risk-taking.

This group requires a greater outside-of-school commitment than the other choirs at WHS; students are often asked to mark music outside of class, submit individual recordings of themselves singing, and complete occasional writing or analysis assignments. Students are expected to practice and prepare outside of class. Additionally, Madrigals participate in a demanding rehearsal and performance schedule throughout the year. Occasional weeknight rehearsals and required weekend performances will occur throughout the year.

Ensemble recommendations will be listed in PowerSchool no later than February 5th, 2026.

The placement hearing will consist of the following parts, in this order:

  1. Vocal range

  2. Tonal recall (you sing back a few notes after I play them)

  3. My Country ‘Tis of Thee

    a. You will get the starting key, but you will sing this a cappella (without accompaniment)

    b. A copy will be provided for you at the placement hearing.

  4. Choral excerpt from class (current WHS Choirs students only)

    a. You will be asked to sing an excerpt from your current choir’s repertoire

    b. You will not know the excerpt ahead, but it will be from a piece your choir has performed or is practicing.

    c. Mr. M will accompany you at the piano.

  5. Sight-Singing

    a. You will perform 8 bars of an unfamiliar piece of choral music.

    b. You will have 60 seconds to practice before you attempt the piece.

    c. You will have one chance to clap the rhythm, one chance to sing with accompaniment, and one chance to sing a cappella.

    d. You can sing on text, solfege, or a neutral syllable. You will be able to write on the sheet.

  6. Advanced choral excerpt (***only if you would like to be considered for Madrigal Singers)

You will sing your part while the other three parts are being sung.

    You have two options:

    a. Prepare mm. 1-53 of last year’s CMEA All State Excerpt.

Q: None of these times work for me. Can I still audition?

A: Email Mr. M!

Q: I don’t know what to sing!

A: If you don’t know what to sing, try My Country Tis of Thee, or ask Mr. M for help.

Q: Are you looking for a specific type of genre in the solo piece?

A: Nope! Please sing anything that suits your voice, whether that is pop, theatre, choral music, jazz, whatever! This is the time for you to present something that you are super comfortable performing.

Q: How many people students are you taking from each voice part?

A: I have no restrictions on how many I am taking from each section. There are currently 13 returning Madrigals members, and the group is usually between 23-26 students.

Q: Do I need to be an upperclassman to be accepted?

A: No. Madrigals typically consists of mostly Juniors and Seniors, but we have had between 1-4 Sophomores in the group the previous three years.

Q: I am unsure if Madrigals (period 7) will work with my schedule next year. Should I still audition?

A: Yes! Audition first, then we’ll figure your schedule out later.

Q: Can I double Madrigals with a science mini or a lab?

A: Madrigals cannot be backed in with any classes, regardless of scheduling context. The amount of repertoire we perform in Madrigals means we cannot afford any student to be missing any part of rehearsal.
